Supplement Use by Recovering Athletes: Safety and Necessity
U.S Olympic Training Center | 1 Olympic Plaza, Colorado Springs, CO 80909 | (719)866-4618
FOCUS We convene at this conference to discuss a pressing matter within the athletic nutrition field: should supplements, protein in particular, be used as a recovery tool? On one side, we have a veritable manufacturer, Thorne Research, who is an exclusive supplement partner to many of the USA Olympic teams. On the other side, we have dietitians from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics who advocate for the consumption of real food in the athletic recovery and refueling process. Also present at this conference are members from the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute of Health, and the Council for Responsible Nutrition. Many Olympic trainers and directors will be here as well to talk us through athlete nutrition regulations and guidelines, as well as to show us around the facilities.
OBJECTIVE It is my hope that by the end of this conference everyone will have a better understanding of what exactly supplements are, why/when they should be used, and whether they are safe for consumption and athletic recovery.
